Religious Education at Acre Heads

At Acre Heads, our vision is an RE curriculum which engenders knowledge and understanding, leading to tolerance and respect for others and their beliefs. We believe it enables children to develop their sense of identity and belonging, which in turn helps them flourish within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society. Children will be given opportunities to develop their skills of enquiry, reasoned argument and reflection to support their understanding of different faiths and to challenge prejudice. RE also contributes significantly to the British Values agenda.

The Teaching of RE Through a Structured Process

All pupils at Acre Heads have access to a broad, balanced and enriching Religious Education curriculum (Discovery RE) through an enquiry approach developing  religious knowledge and world views. This is done through a spiral designed scheme of work with the following key principles in mind:

Cyclical: Pupils return to the key areas again and again during their time at Acre Heads.

Increasing Depth: Each time a key area is revisited it is covered with greater complexity.

Prior Knowledge: Upon returning to each key area, prior knowledge is utilised so pupils can build upon previous foundations, rather than starting again.

This ensures that the our scheme of work identifies what pupils already know before outlining the new learning in the next stage of the learning journey. Children will develop an understanding of key concepts from a range of religions and worldviews, through engaging with quality resources and deploying the skills needed to understand, interpret and critically evaluate texts, sources of wisdom and authority. Our children explore their own responses and those of others to questions of meaning, purpose and truth, enabling them to develop their own ideas, values and identity. They can then participate fully and positively in our society with its diverse religions and many differing worldviews.

Scheme of Work Structure

Lesson 1
A new unit is introduced by asking the children a question to get them thinking about an aspect of the religion being taught. Children are invited to share what they already know about the relevant religion and are given the opportunity to ask questions. These questions will be answered by the end of each lesson.

Unit Lessons
Discovery RE is an enquiry-based learning approach from Foundation Stage to Year 6. Through engaging and interactive lessons, children will investigate 59 enquiry modules covering Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. This scheme is linked closely with the Hull and East Riding SACRE syllabus.

Summary
The unit of learning finishes with a summary of the religion studied. The enquiry questions from the beginning of the theme, including the children’s questions, are revisited to ensure these have been answered.
